I'd read up a bit on the Otago peninsula, south and east from Dunedin, so opted on a bike ride out and back to see the coastline and perhaps some seals and albatross.
The road hugs the coastline pretty much all the way for about 30 kms out to the viewpoint where you are surrounded by gulls and can look down to spot seals on the rocks.
Then back to Dunedin with a very pleasant tailwind and views of the bay.
Now for the challenge of the day! To cycle up the world's steepest street, according to Guinness Book of Records - Baldwin St.
Too much weight and too few gears found me zigzagging then grinding to a halt about 3/4 way up, followed by a steep walk in cycling shoes to the top. Of course most people arriving after me on foot, by car or even by taxi didn't ask if I cycled all the way - they just assumed. I didn't feel necessary to tell them if they didn't ask ;)
The ride down was equally challenging!
Got back to the backpackers to get changed then started the drive up the coast then inland to tonight's destination, a farm stay just outside Kurow. On the way there were a number of interesting stopping points including the Moraiki boulders...
... and the penguins and seals on the beach at Bushy Beach.
Spot the penguin :-
and the seal :-
Forgot that I'd arranged for dinner at the farm stay so I was very pleasantly relieved when a big slap up plate was waiting for me when I arrived at about 20:15.
Another stunning day, with a bit too much sun on my nose ;)
Signing off with the "boulderama of the day".
