Day 30: Te Anau - Milford Sound

Alastair, Rosie's husband, had given me some good tips for things to do on the road to Milford Sound. I set off fairly late in the morning, to let the tourist buses go through first, then first stop was a beautiful nature walk into a red beach forest and down to the shore of Lake Gunn.

They are so good here in New Zealand at taking care of and promoting nature walks. Really good signage, information boards and carefully chosen rest points with stunning views. This was a lovely little walk and even the birds scavenging for insects weren't disturbed by my presence.

From there I drove further along to the parking area at the start of the Routeburn Track, one of New Zealand's many multi day tramps. These walks are excellent. I'm not a distance walker - hurts my back & knee too much - but I'd really like to do some of them. There are huts to overnight in along the way but apparently they are often fully booked. I just walked for about 75 minutes up to the Alpine nature trail at Key Summit, a rise of over 600 metres. Stunning views both on the way up and at the top.

The next stretch of road was just stunning as you head on up towards the Homer Tunnel, about 1.4 kms of single lane bumpy 10% downhill, followed by the series of hairpins down towards Milford Sound.

Last stop before my final destination was The Chasm, a spectacular waterfall which has forced it's way through the mountain.

The great thing about Milford Sound is that you don't see it until you get there. I drove all the way down to the lake shore to see this stunning view welcome me.

There's nothing much here other than the lodge, a restaurant/café and the harbour from where numerous cruise trips depart (and return) every day.

I'm staying in the backpackers wing of the Milford Lodge, with a reasonably early start tomorrow as I'm going kayaking.

Again, difficult to choose, but I loved the red beach forest so here is today's "panorama of the day".
