The first was Matheson Lake, reached by taking a 20 minute walk from the car park a few kms west of Fox Glacier. This must be one of the most photographed spots on the South Island, as it reflects Mt. Cook perfectly on a clear and still day.
Today was still but overcast. It was still well worth the detour.
From there I continued due west to Gillespie's Beach, site of old gold mining activity and known for it's good views of the Southern Alps, though not today. On the way back however you get a great view of the Fox glacier, which was my next stop.
From the car park it's a 20-30 minute walk up the glacial valley. It's like walking on a space adventure movie set. You get up to about 200 metres from the glacier. No way my photos give a true sense of how it really looks.
Just as I got back to the car the drizzle started so after a quick coffee stop in Fox Glacier township I drove all the way south to Haast where I'm staying the night. Just short of Haast I stopped during a dry spell to look at the coastal walk at Ship Cove. After so many long smooth sandy beaches it was cool to find one with just millions and millions of round and flat pebbles and loads of interesting driftwood.
So I was already checked in to the backpackers in Haast by 14:30 which suited fine. After many long days full of impressions and experiences I really appreciated being able to get all my clothes washed and dried, take my time cooking dinner and relaxing reading for a couple of hours.
Think it'll be an early night tonight before getting back up to speed again tomorrow.
Can't choose between a "mirrorama of the day" and a "pebblerama of the day" today so we'll splash out and go for both.
