Anyway, quick shower and breakfast to be ready to be met by Ricky from Rosco's Milford Kayaking. We drove down to the jetty, got kitted out in loads of kayaking gear, chose our partners (mine was Martin from São Paulo in Brazil) and got out on the water for a fantastic 4 hours of sea kayaking.
Ricky was a great guide, so laid back he was almost horizontal, helping us spot both seals and a Fiordland Crested penguin.
We were so lucky with the weather. Sunny and calm until the sea breeze built up and brought with it some rain for our last half hour.
A truly outstanding experience.
After a coffee stop at the Milford Lodge I then started the drive back to Te Anau, stopping off at some more interesting places along the way such as the Humboldt Falls, Moraine Creek and Mirror Lakes.
So after two days I was back in Te Anau. The Milford road has so many interesting places to stop at along the way and some great walks that even just the return trip is worth doing, but when you add to that the Milford Sound it makes for an unforgettable excursion.
I continued on to Manapouri, tonight's destination, and checked in to the backpackers. This time it was a place with some self-contained huts a couple of kms outside the village. Shared a 4 bed hut with 2 German girls and a Chinese girl who were all in bed by 8:30pm! Hinting there'd be no partying in the dorm I drove back into the village for New Zealand's worst dining experience. Frozen, uncooked fish & soggy chips. Did my best Gordon Ramsey impersonation, left the premises without paying but after depositing my meal in the gents' sink, then snuck in to the dorm without wakening the girls for an early night.
Today's kayaking and the scenery around Milford Sound were one of the highlights of the trip. Signing off with the "panorama of the day" and with a special wish for my dear little sister - get well soon Lorna!
