Weather forecast was dodgy to say the least - thunderstorms and hail - so I thought it best to drive right away along to the Abel Tasman National Park and see what I could before the storm blew in. First stop was "Split Apple Beach", one of the most incredible coastal rock formations I've ever seen.
You get to the beach via a short walk through the bush which I got back to just before the rain came.
As the storm seemed to be moving in I decided to chance on cutting my losses and driving all the way to tonight's destination, just past Collingwood on the way to Farewell Spit which juts out into the Tasman Sea on the "top of the South".
Not long before I reached Collingwood it became clear I'd just missed the hail storm. A car was in the ditch to the side of the road and the few remaining cars on the road were doing about 20-30 kph.
Got checked in to yet another fantastic backpackers then, as the weather had cleared, got right out on the bike for what turned out to be a bit of an adventure.
I firstly made my way along the flat coast road to Puponga then took the gravel road to the Farewell Café for a short break.
Then the little detour up to the viewpoint...
... before negotiating my way past the "guard sheep" onto the grass road which took me eventually to "Grassy Hill Beach".
I'm guessing that's the first Gios road bike those sheep have seen on that grass track. I'm pretty sure a friend of mine would have called it "sportgrass".
A cool little ride which, after getting caught eventually by a rain shower on the way home, ended at just under 50 kms.
Cooked dinner back at The Innlet where I've pulled the short straw tonight - I have to share a room with 3 young pretty German girls. Otherwise, it was a good day and end with a "panorama of the day" in honou of Alfredo Gios of Torino.
