Equipment summary

The result of my "travelling light" choice is that space is a premium and weight should be kept to a minimum. I've basically got 4 places to put things - on the bike, in my jersey pockets, on my body & in my Rapha backpack. On a typical day out riding the set-up will look like this:-

On the bike:-

  • A frame mounted mini-pump
  • Garmin 800 GPS / cycling computer
  • two 500ml water bottles
  • mini front & rear battery operated lights (to be seen, not to see with as I won't cycle beyond sunset)
  • medium saddle mounted bag (containing 3 spare tubes, 2 mini tools, tyre removal lever, spare screws for shoe cleats, puncture repair patches, valve tightening tool, spare valves, spare chain links for Campa 11-speed chain, spare 11-speed chain).
  • wire cycle lock with padlock

On my body:-
  • carbon soled road cycling shoes with Shimano SPD cleats (easier to walk in than Look or Speedplay)
  • overshoes - keeping shoes dry 6 feet warm
  • short hi-vis Rapha cycling socks (also suitable for off bike)
  • removable knee warmers
  • cycling bib shorts
  • short or long armed base layer
  • short or long armed cycling jersey / optional removable arm warmers
  • hi-vis gilet
  • cycling mitts
  • cycling cap
  • prescription sunglasses
  • helmet
In my jersey pockets:-
  • (left) couple of snacks
  • (middle) rain jacket
  • (right) iPhone6 - handy for grabbing to take photos while riding
