Day 11: Coromandel - Auckland

The talk at the breakfast table at the backpackers in Coromandel this morning was all about "New Chums Beach", apparently rated by National Geographic as one of the top 5 beaches in the world. A bold call by a very reputable magazine so sounded well worth a look.

I think the Lion's Den backpackers in Coromandel was the best so far on the trip. Cosy, relaxed, a bit of a bohemian atmosphere and again a room to myself - all for just $25.

After a scenic drive across the width of the peninsula I then turned north up the east coast until I found the car park and the sign for New Chums Beach. There then followed a 30 minute walk over a rocky shoreline, then through the coastal forest

before you eventually reach the edge of the forest and the most wonderful beach opens out before you. Photographs don't do it justice, but here are a few which give a hint as to just how right National Geographic are..

The mile long beach was almost deserted, apart from a little company.

Well worth the walk - an idyllic little spot, without any easy access route and therefore still completely unspoiled.

The remainder of the afternoon was then spent taking the scenic coastal route around through Thames and onto Auckland - the country's biggest city. As many people live here as in the entire South Island.

Got through the Friday evening traffic and easily found my way to Andrew & Gill's house - my hosts for the next two nights. Home cooked dinner, a load in the washing machine, a friendly welcome and a big double bed all to myself - highly appreciated luxuries at the end of my 2nd week on the road. Sweet dreams.
