Day 3: Molesworth Station - Wellington

Boy did I sleep well last night!

Woke to a beautiful morning in Molesworth and was soon treated to a cooked breakfast by Ann. Paul and I then set off for the 2 hour drive out of the station and down to Blenheim. A beautiful route, firstly through the high country where we could see a lot of fresh snow on the hills from yesterday afternoon, then through grape country. The vineyard workers were out mowing the grass short to try to avoid any frost building up and destroying the grape crop. Apparently the snow fall and low temperatures were very unseasonably late.

Again the scenery was stunning, as can be seen from the "panorama of the day" today...

Down in a much warmer Blenheim, the capital of Marlborough wine country, I gave the bike a good wash and bade Paul farewell.

Popped into McDonalds, not for a burger but as most travelers know almost every McD's has free wifi ;) Their coffee isn't too bad and their toilets are clean.

Worked out that if I could cycle the 31kms to Picton at about 24kph then I might catch the 14:20 Bluebridge Ferry across the Marlborough Sounds to Wellington. As luck would have it the ferry was delayed so I had loads of time to get a ticket and stow the bike onboard.

The ferry takes about three and a half hours and is pretty comfortable. No complaints about the fish and chips for lunch!
Weather isn't great today but you still get some nice views as you sail through the sounds.
So today's cycling was easy - just 31kms and then the short ride from the ferry terminal in Wellington to the hostel. Unfortunately, no sheep at all today, so the "sheep of the day" theme takes an enforced break.

The ferry sailing went well and we arrived in Wellington at about 6pm. Rolled along the harbour path and checked in to the YHA Wellington, a really good, big, city centre hostel. Didn't take long to freshen up before heading out to explore early evening Wellington where the weather had perked up and the harbour was calm.

Seems like a really nice city with a fairly modern harbour area with bars and restaurants. So after savouring the best dark beer so far, a Mac's Black, it's goodnight from the southern tip of the North Island.
